Tim Burton‘s twisted comedy fantasy, Beetlejuice, has gone down in cinema history as one of the wackiest movies from the 80s.The story follows a recently deceased couple, Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis), who find themselves trapped in their home as ghosts. The contracts signed in 2001 state that if Burton or Marie sued over the deal, the winner would be entitled to recoup his fees and costs.īurton met Marie, a former Calvin Klein model, at a club in 1991. He was influenced by the former stripper Lisa Mary, an artist and actress, whom he dated for a long time, got engaged in early 1992, and continued to live together until 2001. Marie may now have to pay Burton's legal fees stemming from the lawsuit. A lawyer for Burton said Tuesday he could not provide immediate comment. Ott, a lawyer representing Marie, did not immediately return an after-hours phone message seeking comment. Marie countered in court filings that she felt coerced to sign the contracts, and that Burton once told her he would take care of her "financial support and needs for the rest of her life." Any release or sale of those images would require her approval, the contracts say. The judge also released copies of the contracts, which divide more than just money.īurton was granted the right to keep an Agnes Martin painting and the rights to large-size Polaroid pictures of Marie, including some of her nude. The judge declared those agreements "valid and enforceable." The judge's ruling noted that Marie and Burton signed agreements around the time they went their separate ways that provided her with at least $5.5 million US, rights to a New York co-op apartment and a Jaguar coupe. After a while, you begin to go along with the joke of Wood's career. The rest of the cast and crew also deserve credit, mostly for succeeding in making such a strangely delicious film. ![]() I couldn't have imagined someone better in that role. It can get tiresome watching Wood's undeserved success, but Landau works so impeccably well as a drugged up Lugosi. Martin Landau, who did win an Oscar for his turn as Bela Lugosi, is what makes this film work so well. ![]() It's also the first real time he played such a uniquely strange character, something he's got himself stuck into doing these days. He easily could have been nominated for an Oscar here. Johnny Depp, in his second Burton feature, begins to show exactly why he's one of this generation's greatest talents. I mean come on, this guy compares himself to Citizen Kane on multiple occasions.Īs for the performances, there's almost too many good ones to mention. Watching a man without any real talent as a filmmaker plow his way through studio executives and convince actors to join him in his quest makes it all the more amazing. The sheer absurdity of Wood's story is really where Burton tends to bring out his best work. Ed Wood has a clear beginning, middle, and end, but it's the stuff along the way that makes for the most entertainment. One of Burton's greatest qualities is the ability to develop a great journey for the characters. A man stumbles himself into Hollywood with little to no experience, and manages to garner decent budgets to make multiple films, that's Hollywood 101. The New Jersey-born Lisa Marie (nee Smith) was a ballet. Although apparently much of the film's details were made up for the movie itself, it's hard not to get a kick out of Wood's story. This tall, striking blonde starlet has done impressive, attention-grabbing bits in films directed by her offscreen companion Tim Burton. Perhaps nobody more interesting than Edward D. It was just an interesting time to be involved in the film business. ![]() I really love when movies take place within the world of filmmaking, especially during the 1950's. But in all seriousness, Ed Wood may very well be the best directing job of Burton's career. Leave it to Tim Burton to direct a film about the "wackiest" filmmaker of all time. ![]()
